Ensenada 1992

Mike Bogert had a film degree, and I was an aspiring filmmaker. With  the help of Josie Garcia, filmmaker who wore all hats, we produced eight video clips that would act as clues for each team, from the memorable "'Assassins" , a parody of the Emergency Room dealing with the body of JFK, to the "Psycho" shower scene, courtesy of Sharon Kelley in one of her many excellent performances. We could not rely on cell phones and You tube then; we were at the mercy of video stores that were willing to play our version of Vaudeville, to rally teams and all customers who might be interested, or dismayed.

The teams began in Encinitas, with about 25 participants, and the road of individual paths took them through Encinitas zoos,  the Del Mar Racetrack, the University of San Diego, Black's Beach, La Jolla cafes and tidepools, and one bar where a rallier had a bartender crack a (fake) Hollywood bottle over his head. Ralliers scouted vessels on the Harbor, the Mexican flavors of Old Town, finding clues in sails and hats. In Balboa Park, antique cars and limousines hid maps and magnetized key boxes holding clues for the two top teams, one which was a bit delayed by not finding the quintessential Presidential limousine, but only an older version. Ultimately all teams had to obtain car insurance at the border, and  behave themselves as they wandered in the dark of Baha to find the Mona Lisa destination. They all arrived, miraculously.

In 1992, Mike Bogert and I, with the help of Maureen O'Brien, looked southward to Ensenada, Mexico as the ideal place to end a rally that would eventually begin in Encinitas just north of San Diego. Our group of Texans and Virginians had spent a number of weekends at Mona Lisa, a ramshackle resort of cabanas full of local color where the bar made the best Blood Marys.
