Labor Day 1988
With the phenomenal success of the first rally, as rustic as it was, Austin loomed in the not so distant horizon as a perfect smaller venue to start a race that would lead to a favorite destination, Lake Travis. Linda Collins and I bravely took on the task, biting off more than we could chew. There were various sorties to Austin to scout clue sites for six teams, and the distance from home as well as the area covered was daunting. The teams had grown and the themes became more clever and more complicated. Finally clues were all type written, but, exhausted ,we failed to double-check our writing as we fell asleep head first on our typewriters the day before the event. To complicate things while planting clues, in my absent-minded sleepless state, I locked my car keys in the trunk with all the remaining clues that had yet to be planted. Only the use of a crowbar salvaged the vent as teams had already left on their respective missions. The mediocre success of the teams was mirrored in the number of hot line calls. The winning team had called four times! Nonetheless the rally succeeded with trips to Hippie Hollow, yells of "Hang the Hosts," and general mirth, drink , food and laughter, which, occurred on the eve of what seemed like half of the group's relocation to sunny southern California.
